VEMA - Verkostomallit apuvälineenä Vaasan kaupunkivesien hallinnassa

In the VEMA-project Vaasa city’s Public Utility Services, Urban planning and Vaasan Water develop cooperation and operating methods for utilizing network models as a planning aid and decision-making support. The goal of the project is to enable comprehensive management of Vaasa’s urban waters and to pilot how network models can be utilized in cooperation between the city’s different result areas.
In the project, alongside the water and wastewater network models, a stormwater model of a pilot area’s stormwater system is implemented. With the help of the stormwater model, a catchment area-oriented perspective is promoted in the planning of both land use and technical measures. The current wastewater network model is being updated by mapping information about mixed sewers and finding out the amounts of leakage water and leakage points.
In addition, stormwater model usage trainings are organized for the city’s Public Utility Services and Urban planning personnel, modeling instructions are made, and illustrative and practical example reviews are carried out. The project serves as an example for the Finnish municipal sector, of the utilization of network models and stormwater modeling in the organization of a city.
