Vaasa’s newest mural is inspired by Jimi Hendrix
Published: 9.9.2024
A mural painted by visual artist Jon Gredmark is now completed in the Klemettilä district of Vaasa. The mural near Rock Werstas is inspired by Jimi Hendrix.
The mural at the intersection of Tukkukatu and Myllykatu in the centre of Vaasa is the work of artist Jon Gredmark.
The mural is inspired by the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix, a symbol of musical innovation and cultural rebellion. The artwork draws inspiration from Hendrix’s iconic song ‘Voodoo Child’.
Bringing life to the urban landscape
Located near Rock Werstas and Graffitilandia, the mural is designed to revitalise the neighbourhood with a blend of music and street art, creating a new cultural meeting point in the area.
– The visual elements of the mural connect with the activity around it, says producer Ilkka Nyqvist from the City of Vaasa’s Culture and Library Services.
In recent years, the Culture Services have collaborated with local artists to commission mural projects in different parts of the city.
Community approach
A graduate of Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, Gredmark has created several public artworks in the Ostrobothnia region, as well as in Tampere and Stockholm.
Jon Gredmark’s background is in graffiti art. In Ostrobothnia, he has painted murals in Vaasa and in Maalahti, where he lives. A few years ago, Gredmark, who uses a collaborative approach, conducted an art project in Vaasa’s Ristinummi district with local residents and pupils from Variska Comprehensive School as part of the national suburban development programme.
In 2022, the Arts Council of Ostrobothnia awarded Gredmark for his contributions to public art through community work.
