Vaasa resident – do you know your neighbours?

Published: 1.4.2025

If not, or if you think it would be nice to get to know them better, now is a great time to put that thought into action. The City of Vaasa encourages residents to connect with new people – especially their neighbours.

Why should you get to know your neighbours? Multiple studies show that knowing your neighbours increases the sense of security. For example, Asuntosäätiö’s ‘Kotionnellisuus’ study from last year shows that as many as one in four (26%) Finns feel that neighbours enhance their sense of security. This sentiment is also shared by Finns who don’t know any of their neighbours. Also, knowing your neighbours can increase a sense of community and help new residents adjust better to their new home. At its best, getting to know your neighbours may lead to wonderful encounters and great friendships.

How can you take part in the challenge? The easiest way to get started is simply by greeting someone or exchanging a few words. Topics like the weather, children, dogs, or even things related to the shared yard of your building are always safe and easy conversation starters. Organising a potluck picnic or a neighbourhood cleanup is also a great way to get to know people. Offering to help can also make a big difference for many people.

How do you get started? Think about how you can take part in the challenge and invite others to join you. Print a poster about the challenge to display on your building’s noticeboard below. Don’t forget to share your positive experiences at puhutuntemattomalle.fi
