The city of Vaasa and Crowdchupa, a startup company from Tampere, will crowd source the survey of traffic signs and road conditions to road users through a mobile game.
In the Crowdchupa application, the streets of Vaasa are covered with coins and other objects that are worth money. The objects are collected by recording a video with the application. Artificial intelligence is used to analyse the pavement damages and traffic sign locations from the videos.
– Surveying roads through a mobile game is an interesting concept, which will significantly speed up the collection of up-to-date data from the Vaasa street network. The video footage and artificial intelligence-based image recognition will be utilized first in the establishment of a traffic sign register, and next year in surveying the condition of the road network says Jukka Talvi, the director of the Vaasa Public Utility Services.
The first surveys will take place in the beginning of December, when the streets of Vaasa are scattered with objects that are altogether worth approximately a thousand euros. Along every kilometre, there will be approximately 2 euros worth of collectable objects. The best surveyors have earned up to 20-30 € per hour in the previous surveys. To participate, you only need a car, a windshield-mounted phone holder and an Android-phone.
Interested participants can fill in the form or join the Crowdchupa Whatsapp-group, where information is provided on the upcoming surveys. You can find out more also from the Crowdchupa Facebook-page. Crowdchupa-application can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
