The new concrete sculpture installed at the Liisanlehto roundabout connects the historical manor milieu and area’s industrial heritage. The sculpture pays homage to the concrete foundry founded by K.E. Nyman and highlights the connection between past and present amidst everyday life.
The concrete sculpture Kolmikehrä, installed at the Liisanlehto roundabout, is a collaboration between visual artist Mia Erlin and graphic artist Ari Kujala. The sculpture honours the history of the concrete foundry founded by civil engineer K.E. Nyman, an influential figure in the area, as well as the verdant manor milieu of Liisanlehto.
With its materials and imagery, Kolmikehrä combines the area’s industrial and cultural identity, nature and technology, as well as the past and present at the crossroads of modern infrastructure.
The details have a historical connection
The sculpture consists of three colourful concrete elements, each standing 4 to 6 meters tall. The imagery on the surfaces of the sculpture’s three elements reflects the flora and fauna of the area’s historic manor milieu.
The colourful patterns were created using special staining techniques and laser-cut stainless steel patterns embedded in the concrete. This work phase was carried out in collaboration with Pertti Kukkonen, the developer of the concrete staining method used in the sculpture.
History and culture are present in the everyday environment
The imagery is a reference to the late 18th century, evoking the verdant woods and gardens of Liselund folk park. The combination of nature and concrete symbolises the coexistence and continuity between humans and nature across the ages.
The location of the sculpture in the middle of the roundabout serves as a contrast to the continuity of traffic and reminds us of the presence of historical and cultural layers in our everyday environment.
The sculpture was funded through an allocation in the Public Utility Services investment budget.
