The neighbourhood school for the Länsiniitty and Koskisuo area will change in autumn 2027

From autumn 2027 onwards, the assigned neighbourhood school for Finnish-speaking children living in the Länsiniitty and Koskisuo area will be Onkilahti Comprehensive School. Currently, the neighbourhood school for new pupils in the area is Mustasaari Central School; however, this arrangement will change when the agreement between the City of Vaasa and the Municipality of Mustasaari comes to an end.
The change will affect first-graders starting school in basic education in Finnish in autumn 2027 in the Länsiniitty and Koskisuo area.
Pupils who started their schooling at Mustasaari Central School (Keskuskoulu) before 2027 will be able to choose to complete their education there.
Mustasaari Central School no longer has space for pupils from Vaasa
In accordance with the agreement between the City of Vaasa and the Municipality of Mustasaari, Mustasaari Central School has been the neighbourhood school for first-graders in the Länsiniitty and Koskisuo area. The agreement will be terminated by mutual consent of both parties.
– Mustasaari Central School no longer has space for pupils from Vaasa. Additionally, due to the declining number of students, the schools in Vaasa will be able to accommodate children from the Länsiniitty and Koskisuo area, according to Kari Nummela, Head of the Education Department for the City of Vaasa.
Siblings will be able to opt for the same school pathway
Families living in the Länsiniitty and Koskisuo area can already start preparing for the upcoming change.
– For example, if a family has two children, with the older one starting school next autumn, the family can already prepare for the change and enrol the older child to Onkilahti Comprehensive School. In this way, both children will be able to follow the same school pathway, Nummela explains.
In Vaasa, registration for school for children born in 2018 will begin on 20 January 2025.
