The cold face of the Ukrainian war photo exhibition comes to Vaasa
Published: 16.1.2024
A photography exhibition on the first year of the Ukrainian war will be on display at Vaasa Market Hall during February and March. The exhibition is based on the work of an international team of photographers and the book Ukraine: A War Crime.
The book contains hundreds of photographs and eyewitness accounts by more than ninety photographers from 29 countries. The photos on display are selected from among them. The exhibition is curated by photographer Svetlana Bachevanova and produced by the Seinäjoki Museums. The exhibition is coordinated locally by the Vaasa City Museums. The photo exhibition was shown last year at the Travel Centre in Seinäjoki. The exhibition opens in the Market Hall on 1 February at 9.00 and will be on display until 30 March.
Photojournalists document a war that is not over
On 24 February 2022, Ukraine became the target of a Russian war of aggression. Since then, the world has followed the war of aggression closely. Photographers are often among the first to arrive in liberated villages and bear witness to what the people have been through. They document the events on site and relay them to others. The images not only show the war and the violence, but also the personal experiences of the photographers in the war zone. The photographs are documents of war, but also aesthetic views of moments amid war.
We must not forget that Russia’s war of aggression is still going on, with no end in sight. According to the UN, more than 14.6 million Ukrainians, or around 40% of the population, will need humanitarian aid this year. In addition, more than 6 million Ukrainians who have been forced to flee abroad need help. In addition to the war, Ukraine is currently experiencing the effects of mid-winter.
International prize for the photographic work
Ukraine: A War Crime has won the International Photography Awards (IPA) as Photography Book of the Year. The book, published by the FotoEvidence Association, is a record of war and violence on Ukrainian soil. The book serves as contemporary documentation for future generations, but also records evidence of war crimes committed with a view to legal proceedings.
