The Christmas event for those feeling lonely is an opportunity to meet new people
Published: 2.12.2024
Christmas is traditionally a celebration when families, relatives, and friends come together. But what if there’s no-one to spend Christmas with? The Christmas event for the lonely will take place at Vuorikoti on 20 December. It is intended for those who long for company to celebrate the festive season with. The event is part of the ‘Talk to Someone New’ initiative that encourages the residents of Vaasa to talk to people they don’t know.
We spoke with Merja Huttunen-Metsi from the City of Vaasa’s Welfare Services, who is involved in organising the event.
Why organise such an event?
– There are many different phases in life, and I am sure everyone has felt lonely at some point. Loneliness can be long-term or linked to a specific life situation. For example, moving to a new place, a breakup, or illness may lead to loneliness. Being lonely during Christmas can feel particularly difficult in many ways. We want to provide the opportunity to spend Christmas with others, thereby alleviating feelings of loneliness.
What is the event going to be like?
– There will be light entertainment and Christmas-themed refreshments. The aim is to create a relaxed atmosphere and share the joy of the Christmas spirit together. The most important thing is that everyone can feel safe, relaxed and happy. The programme allows for meeting new people, within the comfort zone of each individual participant.
Who is the event intended for?
– The Christmas event for the lonely is open to everyone. We do not wish to define what loneliness is; that’s why the Vuorikoti event is open to anyone who feels lonely and would like to spend Christmas together with others. The event can accommodate 50 people, and no advance registration is required.
How is the event part of the ‘Talk to Someone New’ campaign?
– The ‘Talk to Someone New’ campaign continues the good deeds of Vaasa residents and encourages locals to speak with people they don’t know. During the campaign, events will be organised where participants can easily meet new people and find like-minded company. Vaasa residents are sometimes criticised for making it slightly difficult to get to know people here. With this campaign, we aim to change the situation and suggest new ways to start a conversation. The campaign will continue in various ways until at least next August and has received a very positive response from locals.
