Surface structures of the Palosaari bridge will be renewed in summer in Vaasa

Published: 7.3.2024

The regional centre for economic development, transport, and environment (ELY) will be repairing the surface structures of the Palosaari Bridge in Vaasa during the summer of 2024. The bridge’s water-resistant structures have incurred damage, leading to the deterioration of the asphalt on the bridge deck. This repair project is being undertaken in collaboration with the City of Vaasa. The current bridge was completed and opened to traffic in 2019.

The cause of the damage will be investigated at the start of the repair work, as it is unusual for a bridge to require repairs so soon after its completion. However, it is important to note that this damage does not affect the bridge’s load-bearing capacity.

It is estimated that the repair work will begin in early June 2024 and will last approximately 2.5 months.

The duration of the repair work depends on various factors, including weather conditions, thus the exact duration will be clarified during the course of the project.

Impact on traffic

The repair work will significantly disrupt traffic. During the repair period, the Palosaari Bridge will be closed to all traffic crossing over it.

Pedestrians and cyclists will be directed to either use the Vetokannas pedestrian overpass in the south or the Peipponen underpass in the north.

For motor vehicle traffic heading from Palosaari to Vetokannas, a temporary roundabout will be constructed on Alskatintie on the southern side of the Palosaari Bridge, and a signal-controlled junction will be built on the northern side of the bridge.

During peak traffic periods in the mornings and afternoons, traffic congestion is expected at the construction site. It is advisable to avoid these congested periods if possible. Additionally, it is recommended to use alternative modes of transportation to reduce traffic in the construction area.
