Palosaari library gets an extension – open until further notice
Published: 26.9.2024
The Palosaari library, proposed for closure as a cost-saving measure, will be allowed to continue its activities. This depends on Vaasa City Council granting it an additional allocation of 137,300 € at its November budget meeting. Currently, the Palosaari library is open to customers during its regular opening hours.
Previously, the Vaasa City Board of Culture and Sports decided that the Palosaari library would be closed as part of the City’s economic balancing plan. However, in its meeting on 10 September 2024 the Board decided to rescind its decision made in June to close the Palosaari library.
Ida Jousmäki, the Chair of the Board of Culture and Sports, proposed that the Palosaari library should not be closed, should the City Council grant it an additional allocation of 137,300 €. The Board of Culture and Sports supported the proposal unanimously.
The matter will be reconsidered by the Vaasa City Council at its budget meeting in November. If the Council grants the additional allocation, the library will remain open. If the additional allocation is not granted, the library will close its doors to customers in November, following the Council meeting, and operations will cease on 31 December 2024.
Earlier in the autumn, a survey was also conducted on Vaasa’s library services. The responses to the survey will be addressed in more detail later in connection with the service network assessment.
