Felix Mendelssohn: Symphony No 3 “The Scottish”

Conductor Kalle Kuusava, who made his career in Scandinavia, and familiar star baritone Waltteri Torikka act as full-service tour guides to the misty islands. Collecting folk songs by travelling on foot across the British countryside was in the blood of English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams. The song cycle Songs of Travel, based on texts by the Scotsman Robert Louis Stevenson, describes the different aspects of travelling, from the beckoning of the road to the longing for the warmth of home. The second half of the concert takes in the Scottish moors and temple ruins with Felix Mendelssohn’s symphony.
