Sixth-graders in the Vaasa region can now apply for a sports-oriented basic education at Onkilahti Comprehensive School. The application period is 20 January - 10 February 2025.
Onkilahti Comprehensive School is involved in the national Olympic Committee’s sports school programme for secondary schools, where pupils are equipped to successfully combine studies and sport.
The Sports Classes aim to enable young athletes to have a good day at school. The school has dedicated sports-oriented classes for pupils in grades 7, 8 and 9. There are 21 pupils per class.

The national aptitude test recommended by the Finnish Olympic Committee will be used when applying for a sports class at Onkilahti Comprehensive School.
In addition, the grade for behaviour must be at least 8, as behaviour in any Sports Class is expected to comply with the Olympic Committee’s sporting code of conduct. A separate athlete’s contract will be concluded with the person selected for the programme.
Helping young people to combine sport and school
The Sports Academy programme’s activities in secondary schools aim to promote the development of pupils as goal-oriented athletes, to develop skills and competences in various areas and to help them combine sport and school, for example when it comes to time management.
In the seventh grade, there are six hours of physical activity per week during the school day, in the eighth grade it rises to eight hours, and in the ninth year to nine hours. All optional subjects for pupils are also linked to sport and training.
The content of the coaching and physical education lessons at the secondary school is provided by the PE teachers of the Onkilahti Comprehensive School and the coaches of the Vaasa Region Sports Academy. Training motor functions and physical abilities are at the core of the activities.
Other important points
Completing the secondary school in this sports-oriented programme does not limit the pupils’ opportunities for further studies. All optional study subjects during secondary school are related to sport and training. The pupil must commit to the programme for three years, and their studies as well as transport to school and the sports activities is the responsibility of the pupil.
Vaasa region also has a Swedish-speaking sports class at Korsholm Högstadium.
