Vaasa City Orchestra
Eero Lehtimäki, conductor
Iiro Rantala, piano
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is a central role model for Iiro Rantala, who has a distinguished career as a jazz pianist but has in recent years become increasingly serious about classical music and composing. The styles of both are marked with effervescent melodicism and natural musicianship, and both have a legendary sense of humour! The Spring Equinox evening will feature a dose of Rantala and Mozart’s music, as our pianist will be the soloist in his new series inspired by Venice. The Venice snapshots explore characters from the canal city, from Casanova to Vivaldi to the disempowered Mozart, and of course, travel by gondola – a truly unstable ride! If nothing else, Mozart’s masterly late production of his bright Symphony No. 39 in E flat major, if nothing else so far, will make it feel like spring.
