Construction of Onkilahti traffic park and pump track nears completion

Published: 1.8.2024

The long-awaited traffic park and pump track in Onkilahti park near the skate park are nearing completion and will open to the public at the end of August. Staying on the construction site during construction is strictly forbidden.

The new children’s traffic park and pump track at Onkilahti Activity Park will be completed in August. They will be opened to the public on 29 August 2024.

– It’s great to see that there is so much interest in the eagerly awaited pump track, but people should be patient and wait a little bit longer. When construction work is in progress, it is strictly forbidden to be on the site, says supervisor Janne Mattila.

The new traffic park will feature a miniature version of Vaasa, with scale models of many familiar buildings. The construction work is nearing completion, but it is not finished yet.

– While construction of the traffic park is still in progress, unauthorised access to the construction site is strictly forbidden. In order to complete the work safely and on time, it’s important that everyone waits until the official opening, says head gardener Kaj-Erik Grandell.

On the pump track, the idea is to move forward on bicycles, skateboards, roller skates or scooters using a pumping motion. Both the pump track and the traffic park are free of charge for residents. The Onkilahti Activity Park is also home to a skate park completed in 2021.

The Onkilahti Activity Park offers plenty of opportunities

The Onkilahti area has undergone a lot of development in recent years. A skate park, an outdoor gym and high-quality lanes for walking and cycling have been built in the park, among other things. At the end of August, a much-requested traffic park and a pump track will open in the park.

There are plans to develop the park further in the future, with space reserved for a children’s adventure forest, a sledging slope, a viewing point, and sports and play areas. The starting point for planning is the development of the park, so that it provides a variety of recreational and leisure opportunities and encourages children and young people to be active.
