Come and learn about English teaching!

Bilingual (Finnish-English) and English-language teaching are arranged at Vaasa’s primary schools. The parents of preschool children have an opportunity to learn more about the English-language teaching in January.
An info session about bilingual (Finnish-English) and English teaching will be held in the canteen of Suvilahden koulu (Suvilahti Primary School) on Monday, 9 January 2023 from 18:00-19:00. The event, aimed at the parents of children attending preschool, is bilingual (English-Finnish).
Language tests for children applying for Grade 1
In Vaasa, the bilingual (Finnish-English) and English-language teaching lines of the primary school will be arranged at Suvilahden koulu in the 2023-2024 academic year.
The selection criteria of pupils hoping to attend the teaching lines has changed. All children applying for Grade 1 are tested for their language skills. The child’s preschool place is no longer taken into account in the pupil selection.
A child applying for bilingual (Finnish-English) education must know both Finnish and English. The child is required to be able to speak, understand and communicate in both languages. The language test will test the child’s language skills and linguistic capabilities in both languages.
A child applying for English-language teaching must be able to speak English. The language test will test the child’s language skills and linguistic abilities in the English language. Previous knowledge of the Finnish language is not required to geta place on the teaching line. The child’s mother tongue can be Finnish, Swedish or another language.
Registration for Grade 1
School registration opens in Wilma on Monday, 9 January 2023 and ends on Sunday, 22 January 2023. All preschool children who apply for either bilingual or English teaching must first register for their local school.
Afterwards, you need to fill out an application in Wilma to change the local school. When the school registration has been completed, the guardians of pupils enrolled in bilingual and English-language education will receive more detailed instructions about the language test, including dates and times.
