Classic 19th-century landscape paintings fill the showrooms of the Tikanoja Art Museum
Published: 20.10.2023
The Tikanoja Art Museum’s autumn season art history exhibition presents 19th-century Finnish paintings. The exhibition Berndt Lindholm - Into the Landscape is open to the public from 20 October 2023 to 21 April 2024. A guided expert tour of the exhibition will take place on Saturday 28 October at 13.00 with PhD Teppo Jokinen.
Berndt Lindholm (1841–1914), one of Finland’s most prominent 19th-century landscape painters, painted images of forest scenes and rocky coastal landscapes that fill the exhibition halls of the Tikanoja Art Museum. The renowned artist was already appreciated by critics and the public during his lifetime, for the atmospheric and natural feel of his paintings.
A painter of the forest and the coast
The exhibition at Tikanoja Art Museum focuses on the forest and coastal scenes for which Lindholm is renowned. His paintings fill the walls of all three floors of the museum, including around 60 paintings and drawings. The exhibition will be extended to include loans from the Gothenburg Art Museum, which have rarely if ever been seen in Finland.
Lindholm studied art in Düsseldorf and Karlsruhe. He also lived for a time in Paris, where he was attracted by outdoor painting and the early expression of the Barbizon school, which emphasised the use of local colours. In 1876 Lindholm moved to Sweden and settled in Gothenburg, where he painted especially the coastal and forest landscapes of the Swedish west coast. Lindholm also worked as curator of the Gothenburg Museum and at the same time taught at a drawing school. He was also curator and secretary of the Gothenburg Art Association. Despite his relocation, Lindholm maintained regular contact with the Finnish art scene and his work was exhibited in Finland.
From research to exhibition
The exhibition was organised in collaboration with the Hämeenlinna Art Museum, where it was on display in the summer of 2023, based on research by PhD Teppo Jokinen on Berndt Lindholm’s life, art, and artistic production. The exhibition at the Hämeenlinna Art Museum is curated by amanuensis Tanja Pääskynen and the exhibition at the Tikanoja Art Museum is curated by Janna Sirén, amanuensis at the City of Vaasa Museums.
A guided expert tour of the exhibition will take place on Saturday 28 October at 13.00 with Teppo Jokinen. The guided tour will cover the entire exhibition and provide a comprehensive insight into the life and work of Berndt Lindholm. Public guided tours of the exhibition will also be held on Sundays 19 November and 17 December at 13.00 in Swedish and 14.00 in Finnish.
