City of Vaasa Participates in the Week Against Racism

Published: 18.3.2024

The Week Against Racism takes place on 18–24 March 2024. The theme this year is intervening in racism. The City of Vaasa’s work against racism is an ongoing process. As an employer, the city does not tolerate any forms of discrimination or harassment. By participating in the Week Against Racism, the city aims to raise awareness on the issue and encourage us all to identify instances of racism and take action against it.

The happiness of residents is enshrined in the City of Vaasa’s strategy, and efforts towards happiness are made on many fronts.

– We want everyone to be happy in Vaasa regardless of factors such as ethnic origin, skin colour, culture, or language. By participating in the Week Against Racism, we want to highlight this important issue, says Director of Integration Services, Ms Hanna Kakko.

Anti-racism work is also important for attractiveness and the city’s image.

– If we want to attract international talents to the city, it is crucial to send a clear message that efforts to eradicate racism are ongoing, Ms Kakko says.

During the Week Against Racism, the city encourages its employees to actively engage in anti-racist actions and reminds them that even small actions matter. Events are also organized throughout the week. Alma Adult Education Centre is hosting an international evening on March 23 with the theme “Taste the World”, and there will also be an open event by the Red Cross on March 19 with the same theme.

What is Racism?

Racism is an ideology where human groups are defined as inferior based on factors such as ethnic origin, skin colour, nationality, culture, language, or religion. Structural racism refers to practices or policies that directly or indirectly discriminate against certain groups in institutions or societal structures. Racism can manifest itself, for example, in the workplace, education, housing market, or services.

Anti-racism is active and conscious action against all forms of racism. Anti-racist action reduces ethnic discrimination, the impacts of discriminatory practices, and negative prejudices.

As an employer, the City of Vaasa does not tolerate any forms of discrimination or harassment. The principle of a safe space is used in work communities and in all city events. This principle means that everyone has the right to a safe workplace where they can be themselves and feel respected as their true selves. By committing to common principles, a more open and respectful atmosphere is created.
