Finnish cellists have been conquering the world for decades – one example being our widely touring chamber and orchestral cellist and principal conductor Tomas Djupsjöbacka. As principal cellist with the prestigious Australian Chamber Orchestra in Sydney, Timo-Veikko Valve is probably the most remote of our cello ambassadors, but he still maintains close ties with Finland. Robert Schumann encapsulates the self-expression of romanticism, and Valve’s visit brings two perspectives to the composer’s turbulent mental landscape. The lyrical Cello Concerto was written amid European turmoil in 1850, and the Symphony in C major, written a few years earlier, moves frantically towards the grand triumph of the end.
