Art school students created portraits of Members of Parliament
Published: 29.1.2025
Students enrolled in basic education in the arts at TaiKon participated in a national challenge to create portraits of all 200 members of the Finnish Parliament. The portraits are on display at the Parliament Library and in an online gallery. TaiKon will also host its own shadow exhibition.
The portraits of MPs are on display in an exhibition at the Parliament Library in Helsinki, from 16 January to 27 March 2025.
The works selected for the exhibition by children and young people from Vaasa can be found at the following address: www.kansanedustajatkuvataidekoululaistensilmin.com
The exhibition at TaiKon will run until 9 March
Not all of the works by children and young people from Vaasa could be included in the exhibition at the Parliament Library or the online gallery. Therefore, TaiKon will host a shadow exhibition titled Kansanedustajat kuvataidekoululaisten silmin (‘Members of Parliament Through the Eyes of Art School Students’) from 20 January to 9 March 2025.
The exhibition is open Monday to Thursday from 16.30 to 20 (TaiKon, Itäinen Kasarmintori 7–9; closed during week 9). Entry to the exhibition is free!
26 works featuring nine MPs
Children and young people from Vaasa created portraits of the following Members of Parliament: Ari Koponen, Matias Mäkynen, Jouni Ovaska, Karoliina Partanen, Wille Rydman, Pia Sillanpää, Joakim Strand, Timo Suhonen and Sofia Virta.
TaiKon students created the portraits based on the official photographs of the MPs. The approach and medium were free.
– The theme was well-suited to our democracy education, and in class, we discussed topics such as democracy and the principles of safe spaces, says Alli Alho, Visual Arts Teacher at TaiKon.
The exhibition challenge is organised by the Finnish Association of Art Schools in collaboration with the Parliament. A total of 22 art schools from across Finland are taking part.
