Alma Adult Education Centre at Kirkkopuistikko 15 to undergo renovation
Published: 12.3.2025
A building technology-driven renovation will begin at Alma Adult Education Centre, formerly known as ’Arbis’ and located at Kirkkopuistikko 15, on 1 April 2025. The project is part of the City of Vaasa’s renovation programme.
The main goal of the renovation is to update and improve the building’s technical systems, and the renovation will not involve significant changes to the building’s layout. The work will primarily focus on renewing and repairing surfaces, in line with the existing structure types and architectural plans. Ventilation will be improved, and the overall appearance will be updated to better reflect current trends, including changes to the colour scheme. Moreover, the building’s original character will be emphasised, for example, by restoring the original ceiling height with curved edge details in the reading corner of the lobby on the second floor. The building underwent a major renovation in the early 1980s.
– The continuity of Alma Adult Education Centre’s operations is of utmost importance to us. This renovation will ensure that Kirkkopuistikko 15 can continue to offer a wide range of services to the people of Vaasa and remain a meeting place for the community. The nearly 150-year-old building is not only part of Vaasa’s cultural heritage but also an important part of residents’ daily lives. Hundreds of courses are held at Alma each year, offering opportunities for personal development, acquiring new knowledge, learning new skills, and meeting new people, says Sannasirkku Autio, Principal of Alma Adult Education Centre.
The renovation is scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. During the renovation, Kirkkopuistikko 15 will be closed to the public, and no courses will be held in the building. Temporary premises will be located at Alma’s main building at Raastuvankatu 31, and at Raastuvankatu 33.
The history of the building
The so called Kurtén House, located at Kirkkopuistikko 15, was completed in 1876. The merchant Joachim Kurtén built it as his residence and office. The building, constructed from stone and brick, has two residential floors, a basement, and an attic. The building was designed by master builder August Lassell, and the plans were drawn up in 1875. Over the years, the Kurtén House has housed several institutions, including Waasan Osake Pankki bank, the British Vice Consulate, a telephone exchange, and Svenska Samskola school.
Kirkkopuistikko 15 is most well-known for having housed Vasa Arbis. After the merger of Vaasa-opisto and Vasa Arbis in 2021, the building is now home to Alma Adult Education Centre. Today, Alma Adult Education Centre offers a diverse range of courses in languages, arts, and practical subjects at the premises.
