LUMO Program

The city of Vaasa is developing a biodiversity program called LUMO, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2025. The program aims to protect and create sustainable and diverse urban environments that support the well-being of nature, people, and animals while preventing species decline and biodiversity loss. At the same time, the program also enhances Vaasa’s ability to adapt to climate change.

The LUMO program includes biodiversity promotion goals, concrete measures, and various monitoring mechanisms for areas owned by the city. By tracking these goals, the program ensures that its actions progress as planned.

The program includes several measures and objectives, such as:

  • A diverse and climate-adaptive urban environment
  • Protection of endangered habitats and species
  • Functional and comprehensive ecological networks
  • Good status of water bodies and small waterways, along with biodiversity and vitality of aquatic organisms
  • Control of invasive alien species
  • Increasing residents’ and communities’ knowledge of natural values and encouraging them to take action for their local environment

You can participate in the LUMO program’s online survey and share your views on promoting biodiversity in Vaasa. The survey is available at https://app.maptionnaire.com/q/28mxh6z2yjk8 and it is open until 12 March 2025.

As part of the LUMO program, a workshop will also be organized in spring 2025 to discuss the program’s goals and measures. More details about the event will be announced later.
