Story Sharing Café @ Wasa Teater

Article categories: Theatre

No one is an object, we are all subjects. There are no them and us. There is only us.

Story Sharing Universum (SSU) started in 2014 and wants to promote the meeting of people from all parts of the world, with different backgrounds and realities through performing and storytelling arts.

Story Sharing Café is a relaxed and cozy event where immigrants, asylum seekers and native Finns can meet. At a café table, in small groups, stories from different parts of the world are shared, under the experienced guidance of the Story Sharing group. You and your neighbors from different parts of the world are welcome to listen. If you feel like it, you can share your everyday story and get to know others in a fun, relaxed atmosphere. The program also includes live music, storytellers and an open-mic part.

During the café at Wasa Teater 12.10, 19.00-21.30 we speak English, Swedish, Finnish, Lithuanian, Arabic, Russian, Hindi, Farsi, Dari, Pashto.

The event has free entry.

When we meet each other as strangers at the coffee table, we all have the same starting point. No one is an object, we are all subjects. There are no them and us. There is only us.

What is it?
The Story Sharing Café, an award-winning storytelling café model developed by SSU, which uses storytelling as an artistic and participatory method, has been recognized as highly effective. Teatterikeskus named Story Sharing Universum the theater achievement of the year in 2017 and in 2018 we received the Stina Krook Foundation’s cultural award for our work. Since 2016, SSU has been involved in projects promoting the integration of the City of Helsinki.

Story Sharing Café is now organized by different groups in Finland and in Europe. We have also produced artistic performances such as I’m So Here – A crazy and diverse performance about identity. During the Café at Wasa Teater we will hear parts of that performance.

We always work with autobiographical stories.

Who is it?
Story Sharing Universum has a multicultural working group of 20 people.
There are native Finns, immigrants and former asylum seekers. The directing team of Max Bremer, Åsa Nybo and Markus Luukkonen are professionals in theater, storytelling and art education.
