Spring concert of the Polytech Orchestra
Article categories: Music
The Polytech Orchestra makes their annual spring tour to Ostrobothnia in April.
The Polytech Orchestra, founded in 1922, is a student symphony orchestra from Espoo, Finland. The orchestra works in co-operation with Aalto University Student Union. Most of the members are students and alumni from Aalto University, but there are also students from other universities and schools from the greater Helsinki area. There are about 80 players participating in the spring tour. The orchestra is conducted by Vuokko Lahtinen.
We celebrate the season with timeless classics of classical music. Sibelius’s powerful Fifth Symphony was inspired by the springtime passage of whooper swans, which “disappeared as a gleaming silver ribbon into the haze of the sun.” The opening chords of Tchaikovsky’s First Piano Concerto illuminate the soul like the first ray of light after the long winter darkness, with Arttu Ollikainen as the brilliant soloist. Meanwhile, Mexican composer Arturo Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 sweeps listeners away with its supple rhythms, awakening even the most reserved spirit from winter’s slumber.
Program:
– Arturo Márquez: Danzón No. 2
– Pyotr Tchaikovsky: Piano Concerto No. 1, soloist Arttu Ollikainen
– Jean Sibelius: Symphony No. 5
