Energy education pathway in Vaasa

In primary education, energy is addressed from various perspectives. Different age-appropriate content and subject-matter-related objectives are highlighted at different grade levels. In the primary grades, energy is explored from the perspective of saving energy, environmental protection, and food production, for example. In upper grades, the topic is explored more broadly, for example, through examining energy production in the Vaasa region and visits to companies.

The Inspiring Energy for Schools project

The City of Vaasa has been awarded a special state grant for climate and sustainability education. The ‘Inspiring Energy at School’ project supports sustainability education in schools by developing learning environments, producing materials, and creating learning content and packages to support teaching, including collaboration with external parties. The project will produce bilingual materials, learning content, and learning packages to support teaching. The project will run until the end of 2024.

Vaasa with Energetic Citizens – towards a sustainable city with citizen energy

Vaasa’s strategic goal is to achieve carbon neutrality in the 2020s. The ‘Vaasa with Energetic Citizens’ project, funded by the Ministry of the Environment, strengthens the engagement and inclusion of residents in the city’s sustainability work by implementing the ideas of local people for a more sustainable urban life. The participation of residents promotes a fair and socially sustainable green transition.

The ‘Vaasa with Energetic Citizens’ project challenged the students to think of a way to contribute to sustainable urban living in Vaasa. The Student Union of the University of Vaasa (VYY) took up the challenge by coming up with a Student Second Hand flea market event open to all university students. The event was sponsored by Vaasa with Energetic Citizens project and took place in Culture House Fanny on 4 April 2023.

In the spring of 2022, the project set up a cultivation box garden in Ristinummi at the request of the residents. The garden supports the integration of immigrants and the circular economy. The municipal waste management company Stormossen sponsored the soil, composted from biowaste from households and food stores in Vaasa. The garden was cultivated by the clients of Integration Services and the residents of the surrounding area, and all the boxes have been in use since the spring. Two cultivation training sessions with interpretation into several languages, were arranged to support the cultivation hobby. Stormossen’s environmental educator also provided guidance on recycling biowaste.
